We have reopened the initial Fully Online Opt-in form to allow you the opportunity to submit the form now. Please reference your Purdue email and look for an email with the subject line Spring 2021 Online Details. Within the email, you will find a unique to you link to fill out the form to opt-in to the Fully Online Option for spring 2021

The form should be completed by January 7, 2021 at 11:59 PM ET when the form will close. After that date, no changes will be allowed.

The initial deadline to request movement from the residential experience for the fall 2020 semester, including those taking courses from a distance or in-person, to the Fully Online Option for spring 2021 has passed. This form may be used to demonstrate that a significant change has occurred during their fall semester that has put their health at risk, impacted their ability to travel to campus due to travel and/or visa restrictions, or had other significant, unforeseen COVID-19 impacts on the student as well as why the initial deadline was missed. Purdue may request documentation that supports this significant change.

There are a few steps you should take before submitting your request for an exception. Have you (check all that are true):

Reviewed the spring 2021 fully online course catalog.

Talked with your advisor and confirmed that the condensed spring 2021 fully online course catalog meets your plan of study needs. The addition of new courses to this list will be rare.

Investigated your existing financial situation and the obligations you have with contracts like those used for housing arrangements in the West Lafayette area. University Residences contracts will not automatically be canceled if an exception is granted.

Determined what your plans will be should Purdue deny your request to move to the fully online option.

Online Option Pledge

If your request is approved, the following Online Option Pledge would pertain to you. Please read through all aspects of the pledge and indicate that you agree to each item. Agreement to all terms is required to move to the fully online option for spring 2021.

Online Option Pledge

The Online Option is a fully online experience, designed for students whose personal or family health could be compromised by being on campus or who cannot come to campus due to travel and/or visa restrictions. It is intentionally designed to provide a limited and targeted catalog of courses to permit students to progress toward their degree objective at Purdue without having any access to the residential campus at all.

In order to ensure we meet the objectives of public health and student progress through alternative, online means, students who opt in to the Online Option for the spring 2021 semester will sign a version of the Protect Purdue Pledge tailored for the Online Option. The Online Option Protect Purdue Pledge will focus upon campus access and personal health and safety. Like the residential version of the Pledge, students who do not agree to and follow its terms will not be permitted to enroll or continue in classes.

The Online Option is available:

to any student who was an Online Option student in fall 2020
to any new student entering Purdue for the first time
to any students enrolled in the residential experience for the fall 2020 semester, including those taking courses from a distance or in-person, who can demonstrate that a significant change has occurred during their fall semester that has put their health at risk, impacted their ability to travel to campus due to travel and/or visa restrictions, or had other significant, unforeseen COVID-19 impacts on the student.

If approved to move to the Fully Online Option, I agree to/understand that:

Not access campus learning and living spaces on the West Lafayette campus

For the exceptional situations where an Online Option student is living in the Greater Lafayette area (all are required):

Observe all campus public health and safety policies when accessing common spaces like taking a walk across the West Lafayette campus or studying in a hammock around the Engineering Fountain.

Adhere to all university conduct rules for conducting off-campus events.

Exceptions will NOT be made for students who are approved to move into the Fully Online Option and feel their on campus job, volunteer work, course or club/activity warrants their attendance on the West Lafayette campus.

The Online Option catalog will focus on serving the needs of current Online Option students and will be limited as it was in fall 2020

Residential students who want to take an all online schedule from the residential catalog (not the fully online option catalog) are allowed to do so, but like fall 2020, these students are considered residential students

Students who simply want to maximize the use of online modality in hybrid courses will not be eligible for the online option. Hybrid courses have been designed around the premise that students can attend class physically and are available for synchronous learning activities, including exams.

University Residences will follow standard processes for housing contracts; contracts will not automatically be canceled if a student moves to the fully online option for the spring 2021 semester

Next Steps

The review and notification timeline will vary greatly depending on the request. Some students will be notified that their request has been placed on hold while the committee reviews each request. Should Purdue determine that additional documentation is needed during the initial review, the window for which you will receive your decision will be extended. All requests will receive a decision before the first week of classes.

When a final decision has been released, an email will be sent to you and your advisor(s) outlining the decision and any next steps that you should take. All decisions are made at the discretion of Purdue and are final.
